Dead Squirrel Removal
Squirrels are one of the quieter cases. VDH's rabies fact sheet puts squirrels, rabbits, rats and mice among the animals rarely diagnosed with rabies, and we found no separate Virginia carcass rule for them.
Before you pay anyone. VDH's hantavirus fact sheet gives a precaution for removing a dead rodent and does not mention squirrels: it says to spray the dead rodent with disinfectant and place it in a plastic bag with enough disinfectant to wet it. VDH also calls hantavirus syndrome rarely reported in Virginia.
What this covers
- A squirrel lying on a lawn, a deck surface or a driveway
- A squirrel found dead in an accessible attic corner or garage
- A squirrel beneath a deck where someone can reach it
Where the limit is
A live squirrel in an attic, which is trapping and exclusion work that this site does not do. Repairs to the entry point. A squirrel inside a closed wall or ceiling, which is information and not a service.
Arlington County's Animal Control page lists squirrels among the animals it does not pick up and tells residents to bag them into an outdoor trash can. That is Arlington's wording, and other places write their own rules.
This page gives no timing. Whether an operator covers your address is settled on the call.
How a call goes
- Say where the squirrel is and whether it is on a surface you can reach.
- Say whether it was in an attic or garage, since the access decides the job.
- Mention if there is more than one animal.
Questions about this animal
Can a dead squirrel carry rabies?
VDH lists squirrels as rarely diagnosed with rabies, which is different from never. The agency asks people to avoid handling dead animals, and the local health department is the contact for any bite.
Do I need to worry about hantavirus from a dead squirrel?
VDH's fact sheet is general guidance for removing a dead rodent and says the syndrome is rarely reported in Virginia. It does not say Virginia squirrels are a hazard.
